When I first heard about the new readings that were to be, I at first doubted the book's title. Writing to Change the World by Mary Pipher is the first thing I saw and I seriously doubted that writing can have any impact around the world. How wrong was I. Writing is an effective tool that can be used to change the world, as well as try to reveal truths.
Mary Pipher uses it in a psychological analysis of the USA, referred as Mr. USA. This chapter caught my attention immediately. I was a bit perplexed on how an analysis of a whole country would be done within one chapter. By the end of the chapter I was nodding with every word that was written on the pages. I never knew anyone else in the world thought the same way I would. Mary Pipher did the thing that I never done, she described the U.S the way I've seen it. Now I know that writing is a powerful thing to use. With writing one can tell the world about what is really happening, and I've read things that I have never known.
In history books the U.S appears as a hero, and protector of the third world smaller countries.
There are books that tell a story from a different viewpoint. No one ever thinks that there is another story and writing has given the people a chance to be heard. Same with the U.S actual struggles. Pipher has done an analysis of the situation of the U.S and offers a treatment plan to help the nation.
I wouldn't know if any official U.S personnel has read the book but this has been an accurate description of "Mr. U.S.A" and I think others should deserve to get to know him as well.

While reading that specific chapter I was a little defensive because I am a patriot. I love this country because it has given me so such. It is my home. Just like Professor Duran said in class today we get defensive when people attack our friends. But I do realize that this country has its flaws and it does things that i wish they didn't. I agreed with the prognosis Phiper gave on Mr.USA, and lets hope that Mr.USA can change.
ReplyDeleteAlma, I'm glad you bring up the term "patriot." If you look up the definition it has a primary, secondary, and tertiary definitions. The third one does not come into play, although it's significant that a U.S. Army anticraft missile is named Patriot. The idea of "devotion" can blind us to the realities that exist in our country that must be addressed if we are to survive as a people. I agree with you that Pipher's prognosis exposes the "flaws" that must be addressed. Let's hope others are listening and that they, too, care for all humanity.
DeleteEric, thank you for posting about that chapter in Pipher. She did a fair psychological assessment of the state of the U.S. It was rendered with kindness and care. If we are to grow into a healthy state, we need a prognosis and a plan for healing, which Pipher offers. I, too, hope that this comes to the attention of not only U.S. personnel but also the nation so that we can start the healing process together.
ReplyDeleteAt first I didn't believe the impact of writing as well, i thought it was affective but never to change the world. But after reading Pipher i do believe in the power of writing.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I felt like at first. How can writing change the world. But Pipher is a great woman. She is so precise in her writing I now see her as a teacher. I would like to keep reading her books such as The Green Boat. Thats another weird title but I bet its great.
ReplyDeleteOmg I just got to say I love this page lol with stuffed animals :)
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about the book I asked myself how could writing change the world. The book showed me how writing can change the world though nice blog!!
